Can certain food reduce calcium absorption?

Aug 25, 2011
Calcium has a number of health benefits and is important for bone health/ but in order to obtain all the benefits from calcium, you need to ensure that it is absorbed the right way. Certain foods, rich in oxalates, such as chocolate, tea, spinach and others, as well as foods, containing phytates, such as seeds and whole-grain products, may inhibit calcium absorption.
Supplements containing calcium carbonate form are better absorbed with food, while those with calcium citrate can be taken with or without food.
Note that calcium can interact with other medications and this may also affect its absorption.
