Generally it is advised to keep to a healthy nutritious diet during your periods. Stay away from foods that lead to water retention and bloating, which can contribute to PMS and further to discomfort during periods.

These are salty foods, alcohol and caffeine. Also try to limit the amount of dairy, processed, fried and sweet food.

It is also important to change your diet before your periods start because it takes time for your body to detoxify.
