Top 7 Worst Food and Drink Combinations

Aug 21, 2009
Some foods are claimed to be truly beneficial for your health, but when they are mixed with other foods or drinks it may lead to unexpected and undesirable side effects. What are the worst food and drink interactions?

Alcohol and Energy Drinks

Many people are used to mix alcohol and energy drinks, but do not realize that this combo can be even deadly. In fact, many energy drinks already contain alcohol, while adding alcohol may lead to an increased risk of injury and other health hazards.

People, who mix alcohol and energy drinks, are inclined to drink heavier and for longer periods of time. The study at Wake Forrest University School of Medicine showed that the students who consumed the combination of alcohol and energy drinks were more likely to suffer from injury or to ride a car with intoxicated driver. These students were more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.

Milk and Tea

While tea is long known to have numerous health benefits, adding milk to tea may not have the same effect. The study conducted by German researchers found that tea with milk does not provide its antioxidant benefit and does not protect heart and cardiovascular system if compared with drinking tea alone.

Previous studies showed that tea is good for heart as it stimulates the release of nitric oxide, which contributes to dilation of blood vessels. Scientists suggest that milk protein casein prevent tea antioxidants catechins from producing its beneficial effect.

If you are used to drink tea with milk, it is better to have tea without milk from time to time to protect heart health.

Diet Soda and Alcohol

Many people choose to reduce their food energy intake and lose weight, drinking diet drinks with artificial sweeteners.  However, if a diet soda is believed to make you lose weight, mixing it with alcohol can lead to negative side effects.

The study conducted by Australian researchers found that artificially sweetened drinks mixed with alcohol can lead to a higher level of alcohol absorption. Such mixture can produce a blood alcohol concentration that could be considered illegal for driving in some areas.

Soy Milk and Eggs

It is also better not to eat soy milk and eggs at the same meal. This is explained by the fact that soybean products, like soy milk, inhibit the activity of protease, the digestive enzyme necessary to digest protein. While eggs are known to be the great source of high-quality protein, the combination of eggs with soy milk may lead to inadequate protein digestion.

Besides, if you are used to eat raw soy products regularly it may have a negative effect on your pancreas, which is responsible for secretion of protease.

Crab and Persimmons

Crab makes a bad combination with persimmons. If you eat crab with persimmon, it may lead to such consequences as abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The crab meat is rich in protein, while persimmon is known to contain high levels of tannin, which when eaten together form hard indigestible substance.

Other food that is advised to eat separately from persimmon is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes produce hydrochloric acid and together with persimmon form persipitant, which is hard to digest.

Milk and Chocolate

Milk and chocolate do not mix together well. Milk is known to be a good source of calcium, while chocolate contains oxalic acid, which inhibits the absorption of calcium. Calcium and oxalate lead to formation of calcium oxalate, which is also hard to digest.

The research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2008 found that women, who ate one or more servings of chocolate every day, had lower bone density if compared to women, who consumed chocolate less frequently.

Milk and chocolate combo may be not very good for people with oxalate kidney stones because they need to reduce the amount of food containing oxalate, like spinach, broccoli and soybeans, and increase the consumption of calcium.

Fruits and Seafood

Certain kinds of fruit, including grapes, pomegranates, persimmon and haw do not match well with seafood. Seafood is rich in protein, while these fruits are high in tannin. The combination of these foods leads to the production of substances that are hard to digest or dissolve.

Also eating together these fruits and seafood may cause such symptoms as nausea, painful stomach and diarrhea. It is better to eat fruits and seafood separately.
