The Worst Fad Diets Revealed

Jan 11, 2010
If you think about rapid weight loss after holydays, try to avoid the most common mistake by keeping to fad diets.

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) published the list of the "Worst Fad Diets to Avoid in 2010". The largest professional association for registered dietitians in UK warns that most of the popular diets do not work and may offer temporary weight loss only due to eating few calories. According to the BDA, the worst fad diets are:
  • Blood Group Diet
  • Detox diet
  • Atkins diet
  • Zone Diet
  • Cabbage Soup Diet
  • Maple Syrup Diet
  • Banana and Peanut Butter Diet
  • Warrior Diet

Popular Blood Group Diet prescribes to eat certain food according to the blood group, based on the belief that various nutrients are digested differently according to the blood type. The BPA specialists say that avoiding certain food groups for a long time can lead to different vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Those, who want to get rid of the toxins with the help of the Detox Diet, are also wasting their time, because human body is capable of cleansing itself, experts claim. Detox dieters often remove the whole entire food groups, eating only fruits, veggetables and drinking water, which also increases the risk of developing various types of deficiencies.

One of the most wide-spread fad diets called the Atkins Diet recommends eating only protein food without carbohydrates with small amounts of vegetables and fruits. High protein diet that includes all types of meat, cheese and eggs, but excludes other categories of food such as cereals, fruits and vegetables, results in increased intake of saturated fat and contradicts all the healthy eating recommendations.

According to the Zone Diet you need to eat food including  40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30% fat. The BDA specialists say that this plan does not coincide with the Food Standard Agency’s recommendations and is too complicated.

The Cabbage Soup Diet that involves eating mostly cabbage soup is claimed to burn fat easily. In fact, the cabbage soup diet leads to nutritional deficiencies in the long run. Besides, most dieters find it hard to keep to this diet and start avoiding the mealtimes.

The Maple Syrop Diet made popular by some celebrities and included drinking the detoxifying maple syrup with lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper as much as nine times per day. In spite of the fact that you are supposed to get few calories and lose weight, the long-term consequences to health can be quite dangerous because it lack important nutrients.

The Banana and Peanut Butter Diet are ones of the fad diets that tell you to eat only one category of food, such as bananas or peanut butter throughout the day. Besides the fact that most dieters start to hate the meals that contains the same food everyday, limiting certain food groups is certainly unhealthy.

Keeping to the Warrior Diet means that you should eat one main meal a day somewhat between 5-7 pm just like the hunters were supposed to eat after they have come back with the goods. This goes against the healthy eating recommendations that include regular meals, especially breakfast for effective weight loss.

The BPA specialists say that the most effective way to lose weight is to eat healthy and balanced diet and increase activity level, which also helps to maintain adequate weight.

Given that the warrior diet is mentioned here I thought ye might be interested in the following extract written circa 1580 by Francisco Cuellar, a survivor of the Spanish Armada concerning the diet of the Gaelic Irish...'The men are all large bodied, and of handsome features and limbs; and as active as the roe-deer. They do not eat oftener than once a day, and this is at night; and that which they usually eat is butter with oaten bread. They drink sour milk, for they have no other drink; they don't drink water, although it is the best in the world. On feast days they eat some flesh half-cooked, without bread or salt, as that is their custom. They clothe themselves, according to their habit, with tight trousers and short loose coats of very coarse goat's hair. They cover themselves with blankets, and wear their hair down to their eyes. They are great walkers, and inured to toil. They carry on perpetual war with the English, who here keep garrison for the Queen, from whom they defend themselves, and do not let them enter their territory'...to this day the Irish Gaelic words for Breakfast and Dinner are direct borrowings from English i.e Bricfeasta and Dinnéar. The word for lunch is lón but is not time specific and literally means 'provision', lón cogaidh for example means ammunition or literally provisions for war.
